Creating A Home Theater Is A Serious
Decision
Today it is pretty hard to find a home with out a television or two or theree. We are now going to consider
taking the television and turning it into a centerpiece for a home theater . This is a decision that shouldn't be
taken lightly. I have pointed out in the HDTV Checklist what to consider, so
I am going to review that here but with a different twist.
So if you are still stymied here are a few considerations that should be made before jumping in headlong to
creating a home theater.
These include:
- Space available - Does the room you intend to use for a home theater have the proper
spacing for speakers, a larger than average television, a good DVD collection?
- Budget - If you need to buy additions to turn a television room into a real home
theater, it's a good idea to set a budget. With home theater costs starting at a reasonable $1,500 or so and
then quickly climbing into the tens of thousands depending on what's purchased, a good budget is a smart idea
to set some limits.
- A game plan - Sit down and figure out what you need before you run out to shop.
Decide how you'd like the room laid out and what components are important to you.
- Research purchases - With so many companies offering a variety of great home theater
products, it's hard to tell from store aisles or even online catalogs which makes and models are the best. Do
some solid research on the components you intend upon buying. Compare reviews and prices within your budget
range. Get the features you'll use. Extra bells and whistles are great, but that's just what they are - extra -
especially if you can't afford them.
- Anticipated use - Figure out who your home theater will be used by. If you intend it
for adults only, then layout and design should reflect that. If kids will use the theater, too, unsupervised,
make sure components that are purchase are properly protected and kid friendly.
- Lighting - Make sure there's enough lighting in the room for it to serve its purpose,
but also pay heed to natural light. If there are big windows, come up with a stylish way to cover them when the
theater's in use. This doesn't have to be costly, but it's an important step in creating just the right
ambiance.
What we want you to do is to make creating a home theater a fun project. It can pay off dividends when all is
said and done. Consider that the price to take your family of 5 out to the movies is going through the roof,
there's a cost savings to consider in the long run to staying home and watching flicks on DVDs. What better way to
make this more inviting than to have a room set aside for the pursuit?
